How do you get over math anxiety?

You get over math anxiety by doing math you can succeed at, in small amounts, often enough that numbers stop feeling like an exam. Everything else is support for that: techniques to calm the moment of panic, and a structure that keeps the difficulty low enough for you to keep going.

That answer is unsatisfying because it sounds like the advice you have already ignored. The difference is in the words "can succeed at". Most people who try to fix math anxiety by force pick problems that are too hard, fail, and confirm the belief that got them here. The research points the other way: the exposure has to be manageable to do anything.

What is math anxiety, exactly?

Math anxiety is a feeling of tension and apprehension that shows up specifically around numbers and interferes with your ability to work with them. It is distinct from general anxiety and from being bad at math, though it tangles with both.

The mechanism is well understood. In a classic 2001 experiment, Mark Ashcraft and Elizabeth Kirk had people solve arithmetic while holding a string of letters in memory. The more math-anxious the person, the worse they did at the recall task. Worrying behaves like a second job running in the background: it consumes the same mental workspace you need for carrying a digit or holding a partial sum.

Adult working memory holds roughly four items at once. Give a chunk of that to "everyone can see I am slow at this" and the arithmetic gets harder in a real, measurable way. You are not imagining the sudden difficulty, and it is not evidence that you lack the underlying skill.

How common is math anxiety?

Common enough to be the norm rather than the exception. When the OECD measured it in PISA 2012, 59% of 15-year-olds across OECD countries agreed that they often worry math classes will be difficult for them. Thirty percent said they feel helpless doing a math problem, and 61% worried about getting poor grades in math. In every single participating country, at least one in three students reported the same worry about difficulty.

Those are teenagers in school, so the numbers do not transfer directly to adults. They do establish that the feeling is ordinary. If you assume you are unusual for finding mental arithmetic stressful, the data says otherwise.

Does math anxiety mean you are bad at math?

No, and the causality is genuinely unresolved. Anxiety and performance are correlated, but researchers have spent years arguing about which one drives the other. Emma Carey and colleagues reviewed the evidence in 2016 and found support on both sides: longitudinal studies suggest early difficulty produces the anxiety, while experiments that manipulate anxiety directly show performance dropping in response. Children who started with high math anxiety showed a significant drop in it afterward. Their brain response changed too: before tutoring, the anxious children showed heightened amygdala activity around math, and after tutoring their activation patterns were indistinguishable from the low-anxiety group. Worth being precise about the limits: 46 children, human tutoring, no app involved, and third graders rather than adults. What it demonstrates is that math anxiety responds to sustained, supported practice rather than being fixed.

Writing down your worries helps in the moment. Gerardo Ramirez and Sian Beilock ran four experiments, published in Science in 2011. Students spent ten minutes before a test writing openly about their thoughts and feelings about it. In the classroom studies, high-test-anxious students who wrote scored 6% better than those who sat quietly, the difference between a B minus and a B plus, and performed on par with their low-anxiety classmates. Two caveats: the lab experiments used math under artificial pressure, while the classroom replication was a ninth-grade biology final, and the technique helped anxious students specifically. Calm students got nothing from it.

Have a method, not just a hope. Much of the panic in mental arithmetic comes from having no plan for the problem in front of you. Why does avoiding math make it worse?

Avoidance works, briefly, which is exactly the problem. Skipping the mental calculation and reaching for your phone removes the discomfort immediately, so the behavior gets reinforced. The cost arrives later.

Ashcraft described the pattern in 2002: highly math-anxious people avoid math, and the avoidance undercuts their competence. They take fewer math classes, choose majors and careers that route around quantitative work, and accumulate less practice than their peers. When they eventually cannot avoid a calculation, they are genuinely less prepared, which confirms the original belief and deepens the anxiety. The belief becomes accurate by being acted on.

Breaking that cycle does not require a dramatic confrontation with hard math. It requires small, regular, low-stakes contact with numbers, which is the opposite of how most people try to tackle it.
