Does one minute a day improve your mental math?

Yes, within limits. A single focused minute of timed arithmetic every day makes you faster and more accurate at calculations you already know how to perform. It does a poor job of teaching you anything new. If you have never seen how to multiply by 11 in your head, sixty seconds under time pressure is the worst possible moment to discover it.

That boundary is the whole answer. Mental math splits into two things that are easy to confuse: knowing a method, and being able to run it fast enough that it is worth using. Methods are learned slowly, deliberately, without a clock. Speed is built through repeated retrieval, in small doses, over many days. One minute a day is a poor tool for the first job and a surprisingly good tool for the second.

One caveat before the evidence: no study has tested a sixty-second daily session specifically. What the research supports is the principle underneath it, that distributed retrieval outperforms concentrated study. The minute is an application of that principle, not a finding in its own right.

What can one minute actually change?

Retrieval speed, and through it, how much attention a calculation costs you. Those are worth more than they sound.

Mental arithmetic runs inside working memory, which is small. Nelson Cowan's 2001 reconsideration of storage capacity, published in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, put the limit at about four chunks held at once, well below the seven that had been assumed since the 1950s. Every intermediate result you have to compute rather than recall occupies part of that budget. When 7 × 8 arrives as a fact rather than as a small problem to solve, the space it would have taken stays free for the structure of the larger calculation. This is why fluent calculators appear to skip steps. They are not skipping them, they are paying less for them.

A minute is enough to touch perhaps fifteen to thirty problems. Over a month that is several hundred retrievals of the facts you are slowest on, which is a serious amount of practice on a very narrow target.

Why does a timed test beat untimed practice?

Because the deadline takes away the option of reconstructing the answer. Given unlimited time, most people will quietly rebuild 6 × 7 by going from 6 × 6 and adding six. That works, it produces the right answer, and it trains almost nothing. Under a clock you either retrieve the fact or you lose the item, and retrieval is the thing that gets stronger through use.

The effect has a long research record. Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke's 2006 experiments in Psychological Science had students read prose passages, then either re-read them or take recall tests on them the same number of times. Five minutes later, re-reading looked better. Two days and one week later, the tested students retained substantially more. Being tested was doing something that reviewing was not.

Their materials were prose, not arithmetic, so treat the transfer as reasonable rather than proven. The mechanism they identified, that effortful recall strengthens what is recalled, is not specific to text, and timed arithmetic is about as pure a retrieval task as exists.

Is one minute enough, or just better than nothing?

It is a floor rather than an optimum. Five or ten minutes on most days will do more, and that is the range we recommend in our guide to learning times tables fast. The case for one minute is not that it is ideal. It is that the thing which actually stops people from improving is skipped days, and a one-minute session has no excuse left standing.

The research also suggests that long sessions are worth less than people assume. In Doug Rohrer and Kelli Taylor's 2006 study in Applied Cognitive Psychology, 216 college students learned a mathematical procedure and were tested one or four weeks later. One experiment compared three practice problems against nine in a single sitting. The six additional problems changed nothing, at either delay. A second experiment took ten problems and either massed them into one session or split them across two sessions a week apart. At one week the split made no difference. At four weeks the advantage was large.

Doing more in one sitting bought nothing. Doing the same amount across more sittings bought a great deal. That is the finding that makes a one-minute daily habit defensible, and it is also why ninety minutes of arithmetic the night before a test is close to wasted effort.

How long before you notice anything?

Two to four weeks, and the first of those weeks will feel like nothing is happening. The Rohrer and Taylor pattern is worth taking seriously here: the spaced group showed no advantage at one week and a clear one at four. The learning that matters most is the part you cannot feel while you are doing it.

A timed score helps with this, for a reason that has nothing to do with memory. It gives you a visible number on a day when the invisible progress is zero. Treat any single result as noise, though. Sleep, caffeine, and which problems happened to come up will move a sixty-second score by more than a week of genuine improvement does. The trend over a month is the signal.

It will not teach you techniques, and it is not the most you could do. Its advantage is that it survives busy weeks, and consistency is the variable the evidence keeps pointing at.
